Tarangire National Park: Baobabs and the Biggest Elephant Herds

Iconic baobab-studded plains along the Tarangire River, home to some of Tanzania's largest elephant herds and a rewarding dry-season alternative to the busier Serengeti circuit.

Plan Your Tarangire Day Trip
Tarangire National Park takes its name from the river that cuts through it, the only reliable water source for miles during the dry season — and the reason the park hosts some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania between June and October, when animals from the surrounding ecosystem converge on its banks. Elephants are the headline attraction: Tarangire is famous for its large family herds, sometimes numbering in the hundreds, moving between the ancient baobab trees that give the landscape its distinctive silhouette. The park is also one of the few places in Tanzania to reliably see fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk alongside more common plains game like zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe, and its swamps and woodland support an excellent range of birdlife, including several species rarely seen elsewhere on the northern circuit. Tarangire sees noticeably fewer vehicles than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, making it a good choice for travelers who want a quieter, still wildlife-dense day out.
