Climate on Kilimanjaro

At Mwewe Expeditions, we want you to be well-prepared for the unique climate conditions you'll encounter on Kilimanjaro:

1. Altitude Impact

Kilimanjaro's climate is influenced by its impressive height, with equatorial trade winds meeting high-altitude anti-trades. This creates distinct weather patterns across the mountain.

2. Wind Patterns

Daily upslope and nightly downslope winds affect the mountain, with stronger winds typically on the southern side due to its flatter terrain.

3. Rainy Seasons

The mountain has two main rainy periods: from March to May and again in November. The southern slopes receive more rainfall compared to the northern slopes.

4. Snowfall

Snowfall can occur throughout the year, particularly during the rainy seasons. The summit area typically receives 250 to 500 mm (9.8 to 19.7 in) of snow and graupel annually, with snow sometimes lingering for extended periods.

5. Summit Temperatures

Temperatures at the summit average around −7 °C (19 °F). At night, temperatures can plunge to −27 °C (−17 °F) under extreme conditions, while daytime highs are about −4 °C (25 °F).
